UK nuclear power shipping start-up Core Power has recruited yet another US Navy specialist as a senior member of its rapidly growing leadership team.

Philip Malone, who led the multi-billion-dollar programme to construct and deliver the US’ newest Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, is joining as vice president of engineering.

In his new civilian role, he will use his operational, nuclear engineering and programme execution skills gained in the navy to provide the strategic, technical and design leadership needed to bring advanced nuclear energy technologies to the maritime industry.

“We are excited to have Phil Malone on our team in Washington, where his track record of driving high-level, complex projects will be a great asset,” said Core Power chief executive Mikal Boe on Tuesday.

“We continue to strengthen our leadership team to cement our position at the forefront of developing nuclear energy solutions for the maritime sector.”

Like many other recent Core Power recruits, Malone, a US Merchant Marine Academy graduate, comes with stellar atomic credentials earned from a naval career spanning multiple operational, management and project delivery roles.

“I look forward to applying my skills gained through 30 challenging and rewarding years of service in the US Navy to my new role at Core Power,” Malone said.

“I am passionate about marine engineering and believe strongly in the benefits of nuclear energy, and am happy to be part of a company that has identified a great opportunity for combining the experience and expertise of the maritime and nuclear sectors to develop solutions that will benefit both.”

His appointment follows hot on the heels of Core Power’s hiring of former US Nuclear Regulatory Commission chief of staff Robert Bryans, who joined this month as vice president of government relations & strategic alliances.

Last August, it recruited Scott Edwards, a nuclear expert with more than 30 years of experience in the transportation of radioactive materials, to oversee liaison with flag states, regulators and class societies.

A month later, the company added former US Navy chief of naval operations Admiral John Richardson; former US deputy assistant secretary of defence for environment & energy security Richard G Kidd IV; law firm Hogan Lovells partner and global energy practice leader Amy Roma; and retired US Coast Guard rear admiral Joe Servidio to its advisory board, which includes big names from shipping and academia.
