Searching for a meaningful marine-themed Christmas gift or looking at how best to make a charitable corporate donation at the year-end or in 2023?

If so, WISTA UK may have the answer.

The rapidly growing UK arm of the Women's International Shipping and Trading Association has decided to raise cash together with the Maritime London Officer Cadet Scholarship to fund a female cadet through her training.

WISTA UK is trying to raise £35,000 for the scholarship and the first monies have started coming in. But now the association is keen to up the tempo and reach its target.

During a WISTA UK Christmas get-together in London on Tuesday at the offices of lawyers Wikborg Rein— which drew a lively crowd who had battled snow and a train strike to attend — the association’s president, Monica Kohli, called for individuals and companies to get involved and contribute to the fundraising initiative.

Kohli, who is a senior lawyer at Gard UK, said: “As of today, women make for less than 2% of the maritime seafarers.

“WISTA UK works to raise the profile of women in maritime and also increase the number of women at sea, through networks, visibility and thought leadership,” she said. Increasing diversity at sea is key to providing a sustainable future for the industry internationally.”
