Technology firm Nautilus Labs has hired experienced shipping executive Jan Wilhelmsson as chief commercial officer and put him in charge of its new London office.

The company uses artificial intelligence and vessels data to help shipping companies boost efficiency and cut emissions. Wilhelmsson's background includes technology and commercial operations.

"His deep knowledge and expertise in ocean shipping is a great addition to our team," said Nautilus Labs chief executive Matt Heider.

A master mariner, Wilhelmsson spent the last year as a non-executive director at maritime technology business accelerator Blue Alliance Partners and two years in a similar role at technology firm Danelec Marine, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Before that, he spent two years as chief digital officer at tanker operator Navig8, following jobs at Wartsila and Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics.

As he joins Nautilus, he highlighted the firm's "steep growth".

"In the years ahead, we will see the shipping industry go through massive changes driven by new regulations on emission reductions," he said.

"I'm excited to join Nautilus, as I strongly believe the use of data and artificial intelligence is integral for gradually decarbonising the shipping industry."

The firm's new presence in London adds to offices in New York, Singapore and Paris.

"Our recent expansion is just the first step towards increasing our global footprint," said Heider.

"London is a strategic hub for our business, allowing us to attract diverse talent from the shipping, financial and tech industries while being close to our clients and partners."
