Sale-and-purchase broker Toby English is leaving Affinity (Shipping) and moving to competitor Simpson Spence Young (SSY) as its new head of sale and purchase.

English is due to join SSY later this year and that company said he will head up the group's worldwide S&P teams in London, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

He will be based in SSY's London headquarters.

He fills a void left by the surprise departure of former S&P chief Dominic Parker at the end of March this year after 25 years with the company.

English was a founding partner of Affinity and had been leading the S&P desk there since 2015. He has focused on S&P for more than 20 years, previously working with Clarksons and RS Platou.

English has been contacted for further comment.

Major restructuring

SSY chairman Mark Richardson said the company is "thrilled" that English will be taking on the role.

"He brings a vast amount of experience and knowledge to the role and we're looking forward to working with him on a major restructuring of our S&P offering," Richardson said.

"This is part of our long-term investment strategy to build out our forward orderbook, combining newbuildings and S&P with long-term period and projects."

English's former boss, Affinity managing partner Richard Fulford-Smith, wished him well in his new role.

Fulford-Smith told TradeWinds that Affinity brokers Tom Morrison and Leo Pirro will now take responsibility for the brokerage's "extended coverage" on S&P, acting as joint heads in London.

He added that Billy Price will also be returning from Singapore to extend the shop's coverage of this "important part of our business in the UK".
