Two crew have been taken from a Korean heavy-lift vessel off the Philippines.

A ship named as Dong Bang Giant was attacked by suspected Abu Sayyaf militants off Bongao in Tawi-Tawi, the Armed Forces Western Mindanao Command said on Friday.

The ship's captain, Park Chul Hong, and a Filipino crew member, Glenn Alindajao, were taken by 10 armed men on Thursday.

Korea's Dong Bang Transport operates a fleet of heavy-lifters called Dong Bang Giant No. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7, but it is unclear which if any was involved.

AIS data showed the 18,500-dwt Dongbang Giant No. 2 (built 2008) in Indonesia on 15 October.

TradeWinds was not able to contact the company on Friday.

The army said it had sent military assets to address the incident, according to local media.

Abu Sayyaf has previously seized tug crews in the region.
