The 1,066-teu Albedo (built 1993), which wasseized in the Indian Ocean in November 2010, went down while at anchorage closeto the coast, EU Navfor confirmed.
A search of the area is underway to try to find anysurvivors, the EU naval force said today in a statement.
The Albedo originally had a crew of 23 seafarers on boardthough Pakistan secured the release of seven nationals last August after payinga ransom.
One Indian seafarer was reportedly killed by pirates.
They had originally been holding out for a ransom of $2.85mbut dropped their demand to $0.7m last year.
