Atleast six ships have been targeted between 3 and 10 January, according to reportsfrom the IMB’s Piracy Reporting Centre.

Inone of the most recent incidents eight robbers boarded a bulker via the anchorchain in position 3:42.16S, 114:26.59E at Taboneo Anchorage.

Analert watchman spotted the intruders and informed the duty officer. On beingspotted the robbers escaped without stealing anything.

Twoincidents took place on 3 January – one in Muara Berau Anchorage in Samarinda andthe other in Belawan Anchorage.

Inthe first incident three robbers armed with a gun boarded a bulker carrying outloading operations at anchor.

Theytook a crewmember hostage, tied him up and stole his personal effects and then brokeinto the forecastle store and stole ship’s equipment.

Inthe second incident robbers boarded an anchored chemical tanker, stole ship’s propertyand then escaped unnoticed.

Inan incident at Belawan Outer Anchorage on 6 January six robbers armed withknives boarded a chemical tanker at anchor via the anchor chain.

Theship’s crew spotted the robbers and raised the alarm resulting in them escapingin their wooden boat without stealing anything.

Oneday later two robbers boarded an anchored chemical tanker at Gresik InnerAnchorage in position 07:05S, 112:39E.

Theycaught the duty watch keeper and threatened him with a knife. However, when therobbers were noticed they jumped overboard and escaped.

Inone of the most brazen incidents robbers sneaked aboard a container shipalongside at Jakarta Container Terminal on Friday last week.

They stole enginespares, but the theft was only discovered, by the ship’s third engineer, whenthe ship left the port.
