Six pirates have boarded a boxship off Guinea, stealing some of its cargo and cash.

The 1,708-teu Windhoek (built 2009) was raided at Conakry anchorage on Wednesday.

Reuters cited a government spokesman as naming the ship Wendok, but no such vessel exists. AIS data shows Windhoek moored at Conakry on Thursday morning.

The IMB also reported an attack, but did not name the vessel, in accordance with its policy.

The attackers broke bridge windows to gain access after the captain had locked the crew in.

They fired guns and briefly held the crew hostage. All the seafarers were unharmed, however. Every cabin was looted.

Guinea's navy had been alerted but the pirates fled before they could be arrested.

The vessel is operated by Toyo Kaiun of Japan.
