Pirates attacked a Greek-managed chemical tanker off Nigeria earlier this month and abducted four members of its crew, several sources said.

The incident took place on 5 March about 32 nautical miles southwest of Bonny Island, the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre said, without naming the vessel.

Two shipping sources told TradeWinds the ship was the 16,500-dwt Madonna I (built 2008). Piraeus-based Atlantic Management SA, who are listed as managers of the ship, declined to comment.

“Ten armed pirates in a black speed boat approached and opened fire... They boarded the tanker using a grappling hook and ladder,” said the IMB, a Kuala Lumpur-based non-governmental agency.

“Non-essential” crew members retreated to the ship’s citadel… after an hour, the pirates left the tanker with four kidnapped crew,” it added.
