Troops in the Philippines have freed a tug captain abducted by the Abu Sayyaf militant group last week.

Aurelio Agacac was on the Tug R9 that was towing the 17,900-gt Super Shuttle Roro 9 (built 1980) when he was seized.

The hunt is still on for his colleague, chief engineer Laurencio Tiro, who was also kidnapped.

Abu Sayyaf seized the men on Thursday near Sibago Island.

The military did not provide further details of the operation.

Last week, Philippines forces also freed two Malaysian men kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf from a tug, Serudung 3.
