Theincidents took place within an hour of each other at the Sikka Crude OilAnchorage, according to the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre.

Theytook place in the early hours of Thursday morning between 02:40 and 03:00 localtime in position 22° 38'N, 069° 53'E.

Inthe first incident eight robbers armed with knives boarded an unnamed crude oiltanker, but were immediately spotted by the officer of the watch.

“Therobbers were observed to be throwing ships property into their boat even afterthe alarm was raised,” the IMB said in a report.

“Theship’s master made an announcement indicating that the coast guard were ontheir way and upon hearing that the robbers jumped overboard and escaped withthe stolen ship's properties.”

Inthe second incident robbers boarded an anchored crude oil tanker via the hawsepipe, stole ship’s stores and equipment before escaping unnoticed.

Inboth cases port authorities were informed of the robberies, but there are noreports of any response to either incident.

India has seen a growing number of piracy incidentsoff its shores in recent months in particular in anchorages such as Kandla and Visakhapatnam.
