A US bridge was forced to close after being hit by the antenna of a tanker.

The incident under the Huey P Long bridge in Elmwood, Louisiana, involved the 113,000-dwt aframax Clio (built 2008) on Wednesday, the New Orleans/Baton Rouge Steamship Pilots Association told WWL-TV.

The span was closed for three hours, but only suffered superficial damage, according to the Causeway Police Department.

The vessel was heading north to a tank terminal in St Rose during a time of high river levels, the pilots association said.

Clio is listed as managed by TB Marine of Germany, which has been contacted for comment.

TradeWinds reported its charter to Shell was renewed last year.
