The body of a seafarer missing following a fire on a research ship off Malaysia has been found inside the vessel.

Mohamad Saiful Ashnar, 31, was discovered on the 1,050-dwt Geos (built 2009) by four Miri fire and rescue department personnel, according to the New Straits Times, which cited Miri Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Captain Md Fauzi Othman.

"The victim's body was then taken to the Labuan marina jetty before being handed over to the police for further action," he said.

Another two crew were injured after the vessel suffered an engine room blast and fire.

Crew jumped into the sea from the ship, owned by Ageo Marine of Kuala Lumpur.

Rescuers picked up 38 crew from the water.

Local reports said Muhammad Hafiz Ismail, 36, had suffered 20% burns and Khairul Isma Ismail, 35, had sustained facial injuries.

The majority of the seafarers are Malaysian, but five are from Indonesia and one man is a Thai.
