Authorities in Bangladesh have recovered the body of a Greek master who fell from a bulker in Chittagong.

Operator Blue Planet Shipping of Greece said it was deeply saddened by the news.

The New Age website had reported that Markopoulos Vasileios, 57, slipped from a rope ladder as he was checking the draught of the 54,000-dwt Evnia (built 2003) on Monday night.

The company described him as "one of our senior sea captains."

Its managing director Marianthe Patrona said: “It is with a heavy heart that Blue Planet now comes to terms with this tragic loss of our colleague. Our thoughts and prayers must be with the master’s family at this very difficult time.’’

Blue Planet is in contact with family members, who have the company’s full support in the days and weeks ahead.

"We continue to work closely with all local authorities while the necessary investigation continues," it added.

The vessel remains alongside at the port.

"The crew urgently responded following emergency procedures, but were unable to secure a rope to the master who was caught in a tidal current," Blue Planet said.

Evnia had arrived from China with about 28,500 tonnes of steel.
