Canadian ferry owner Marine Atlantic has revealed a bunker leak from a tanker in Port aux Basques.
It said the 3,600-dwt North Atlantic Kairos (built 2008) had suffered a spill on Sunday.
The company added it had been working with the Canadian Coast Guard "regarding observation and response activities." A boom was placed around the tanker.
The vessel is operated by North Atlantic Refining, which was also working to contain the spill.
"North Atlantic is currently investigating the cause of the spill," Marine Atlantic said.
"This is not expected to impact our crossings once weather conditions improve and operations resume."
There were no details on the size of the leak.
North Atlantic confirmed the leak in a statement, saying it was discovered "at the same time as North Atlantic Kairos was in the process of delivering product to a Marine Atlantic tank."
The crew activated its response procedure, the company said, and the investigation was continuing.
