South Africa's National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has helped airlift a crewman who suffered burns on a Cido Shipping VLOC.

NSRI said it received reports on Thursday of a 35-year-old Chinese male with burns to his face on the 277,000-dwt Pacific Garnet (built 1995).

The vessel was diverted to head towards Port Elizabeth.

A South African Air Force helicopter was sent with a paramedic and two NSRI rescue swimmers.

It met the ship 18 nautical miles off Kenton-On-Sea.

The team found the man stable. He is believed to have been injured while welding.

He was able to walk to the chopper and was taken to hospital in Port Elizabeth.
