An investigation has been launched after a Hoegh Autoliners-chartered car carrier hit a berthed tug in Durban, South Africa.

Video footage shows the bow of the 6,500-ceu CSCC Asia (built 2009) collide with the Inyalazi side-on on 16 April, before reversing away.

The Independent daily cited Nokuzola Nkowane, acting Durban port manager, as saying: “No injuries were reported as there were no employees on board the tug Inyalazi.

"Damage occurred to the quayside and the tug sustained a hole on its side which has resulted in an ingress of water into the tug. Tug Umbilo was deployed to the site with a salvage pump to remove the water from Inyalazi."

She added: “Port operations were not affected. The car carrier vessel was able to commence operation and the tug Inyalazi will be moved to the dry dock for repairs.”

Port authority Transnet has started a probe into the incident.

Hoegh Autoliners told TradeWinds it only operates the ship commercially.
