A brawl on a UK-flagged general cargoship ended up with its master going to hospital.

Germany's Mecklenburg-Vorpommern police said the incident occurred on the 3,600-dwt Eastern Vanquish (built 2012) in Rostock on 17 January.

In the late evening, marine police and an ambulance were called to the vessel.

There had been a "quarrel" between the chief mate and the captain, both Russians, police said.

"This ended in a physical confrontation," police added. "The captain had to be taken to a hospital with facial injuries."

After emergency treatment, the patient discharged himself, contrary to medical advice.

The vessel, listed as managed by Longship of The Netherlands, continued its journey towards Lubeck.
