A clean-up has begun in New South Wales, Australia, after debris washed up from a Yang Ming containership that lost 83 forty-foot boxes on Thursday.

ABC reported that nappies, sanitary products and surgical masks were among the rubbish floating in the water off Port Stephens.

The 4,250-teu YM Efficiency (built 2009) was hit by heavy swells en route from Kaohsiung to Sydney.

A total of 30 containers had also collapsed on deck.

Authorities spotted four containers about 1km off Hawks Nest, while residents have collected items including containers of emu oil, toilet-paper packaging, thousands of red foil lolly wrappers and clocks still in their packaging.

Yang Ming has confirmed the vessel had 3,077 teu on board.

"Yang Ming headquarters has an emergency task force set up to deal with this incident immediately to monitor the development of the incident," it added.

"Till this moment, everything is under master’s control, and vessel's safety [of[ navigation has been well secured."

The ship has arrived off Sydney and was awaiting a berth.

"The relevant measures to unload those collapsed containers on deck, as well as damage repair for the deck fittings are also under arrangement," it added.

"The overboard containers will be salvaged/removed by vessel's insurer, Britannia P&I club."
