A CGM CGM-chartered containership has been refloated after an incident at Cape Town, South Africa.
Port authority Transnet and maritime safety organisation SAMSA combined to free the 8,530-teu CMA CGM Samson (built 2011), owned by Danaos, after it had struck a breakwater on entering the port at low tide on Tuesday, the IOL website reported.
Three tugs were brought in to assist the operation.
CMA CGM told TradeWinds the ship grounded for a few hours at the entrance to the port.
Cape Town port manager Mpumi Dweba-Kwetana told IOL: “Thanks to the capabilities, commitment and teamwork of our marine crew working alongside other emergency role players, this was only a short disruption to the port and its customers.”
"The vessel is now safely berthed at the container terminal’s Berth 604 where independent surveyors will assess damage," Transnet said in a statement.
The ship was carrying 1,000 containers from Singapore.
No injures were reported among its 23 crew.
It is next destined for Pointe Noire in Congo.
Danaos has been contacted for further information.
