A Carnival cruiseship newbuilding due for delivery in October 2019 has escaped series damage during a fire at Meyer Turku in Finland.

The German-owned yard said a fire broke out on deck 15 of the 183,900-gt Costa Smeralda on Monday, caused by welding work inside the ship.

A shipyard spokesperson said t he fire started at about 16:45 local time and was extinguished by the local fire brigade at around 18:15.

“ At the moment approximately ten people have slightly inhaled smoke and two people have had their slight injuries checked,” the spokesperson said.

Material damages were described as “minor” and there is said to be “no effect to the building schedule” of the ship.

Costa Cruises’ first LNG-powered vessel was floated out of her building dock late last week and starts outfitting ahead of her delivery.

The Italian-flagged ship is set to be based and bunkered in Barcelona, Spain operating cruises to nearby Italy and France.
