Costamare is the latest heavyweight in the containership market to publicly sway away from scrubbers to meet incoming emissions laws.

Maersk Line and Hapag-Lloyd have both previously placed other technology over the use of scrubbers with new sulphur emissions laws creeping closer to implementation.

Greg Zikos, chief financial officer of Costamare, says the company has looked at various options and based on current circumstances would not opt for a scrubber solution.

Speaking on a post-results conference call Zikos questioned if scrubbers made sense from an economic and environmental standpoint.

“If most people do not install scrabbles like is the case as of today and you may find yourself on the wrong side,” he reasoned. So, we don’t feel that is something that today makes sense.”

Zikos said Costamare was following the situation relating to scrubbers on larger vessels, including newbuilding, but was unable to offer any specific guidance right now.

He was speaking after Costamare booked a first quarter profit of $0.12 per share, edging ahead of consensus.
