Three seafarers missing after jumping from a VLCC struck by fire have been rescued, the tanker’s owner says.

As TradeWinds reported yesterday an explosion rocked the 316,217-dwt Desh Vaibhav (built 2005) off the coast of Muscat.

While most of the crew left on a lifeboat, four jumped into the water. One was previously known to have been rescued and airlifted to hospital suffering from burns.

In an update today, SCI says the situation on board the ship is now “totally under control and the vessel continues to be in full command”.

It adds all personnel who left the ship are now safely back on board, expect for a second injured party who has been sent ashore.

SCI says the ship was hit by an explosion in one of its cargo tanks while en route Fujairah in the UAE.

A tanker owner told Platts yesterday the tanker was unladen, meaning a spill is unlikely.

The tanker is one of five VLCCs in the fleet of State-owned SCI, which is also active in the suezmax and aframax sectors of the crude business.
