All 12 Indian crew have been rescued from an asphalt tanker that sank in the Persian Gulf.

The French navy's Cassard-class anti-aircraft frigate Cassard received a distress signal on Tuesday morning from the 1,400-dwt Durban Queen (built 1983), The Week reported.

The vessel was listing and had capsized before a helicopter sent by the frigate reached the scene.

The crew were found clinging to the overturned hull.

But moments later the tanker began to sink.

Two pilots, a diver and a heli-hoisting operator began lifting the men to safety.

Four were taken to a nearby merchant vessel, while others were tended to aboard the frigate.

All 12 were then transferred to a cruiseship.

The tanker is operated by Prime Tankers of the UAE, which has been contacted for further information.
