A seafarer has died in an explosion on an Indian-managed tanker that had stopped for repairs off Cochin.

Manager Elektrans Shipping said the 16,700-dwt Nu Shi Nalini (built 2012), owned by Arya Ship Charterers, was en route from Mundra to Colombo in Sri Lanka.

It headed instead to Cochin on 13 June to attend to technical repairs.

When it was safely anchored off Cochin port, a blast was reported in the engine room on the lower platform when machinery was started.

One crewman suffered burns and was evacuated immediately by helicopter, but died later in hospital.

The fixed firefighting system was activated and the fire brought under control that day.

"We are deeply saddened on the unfortunate demise of our crew member and are in close contact with his family," Elektrans said.

"The tugs have been called for to provide further assistance as required on board.

"The situation on board the vessel is under control and the crew are reported safe.

"All necessary and timely assistance is being provided by directorate general of shipping, port authorities at Cochin, Indian Navy, Indian coast guard, Mercantile Marine Department Kochi and vessel P&I providers."
