Casualty situations are often dramatic and make perfect photo opportunities. That is why the announcement of the International Salvage Union (ISU)’s annual photography competition has become such a popular occasion.

The ISU’s 2017 competition was no different, with a series of spectacular images from salvage companies all over the world contesting for the prize.

Multraship Towage & Salvage’s photograph of the grounding of the 14,074-teu CSCL Jupiter (built 2011) in the River Scheldt near Antwerp last August was announced as the winner at an ISU members' event in London.

Judges said the picture seems to capture both the severity of the casualty and the massive size of ultra-large containerships as passers-by on the beach appear dwarfed by the giant vessel.
