Shipping at Australia’s Port of Dampier have been advised to batten down the hatches in advance of the potential arrival of a cyclone.
Authorities are said to be monitoring the progress of a tropical low which is currently located over the Timor Sea, reports agency company GAC.
According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology’s latest forecast, it is likely to move in west south westerly direction and is expected to reach category 2 tropical cyclone.
The port of Dampier is said to be monitoring the weather system and assessing its likely path and potential impact on the port.
Vessel masters have been advised to ensure that their ship’s engines and machinery are fully operational; stability, trim, and propeller immersion are appropriate; and that manning, stores and bunkers are adequate for departure.
Meanwhile, terminal and berth operators have been told to ensure that their response plan take into account the time required for ship’s to clear the port and the approaching tropical system safely.
The Port of Dampier, located in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia, is the world’s second largest bulk export port.
Exports include iron ore, salt, liquefied natural gas, anhydrous ammonia as well as project cargo, break bulk and general cargo
