More bodies have been recovered from an explosion that took place on an oil tanker anchored in Pakistan.

The death toll from the blast at the Gadani shipbreaking yard yesterday has now reached 18, local media report.

More than 50 workers were injured due to the explosion while many more are trapped in the vessel.

Basheer Mehmoodani, president of a local union, told Reuters there was an unclear number of workers still inside the burning ship.

The explosion reportedly sent metal pieces flying up to two kilometres away.

People were jumping overboard to escape the blaze, media reports suggest.

Sources told TradeWinds yesterday the vessel that caught fire is the 149,235-dwt Aces (ex-Federal 1, built 1982).
