Ecochlor, a maker of ballast water treatment systems, says it named Steve Candito as the company's new chief executive.

Candito will replace Charlie Miller, who has been at the helm of the Maynard, Massachusetts-based company since 2003.

Miller's background was chiefly in engineering. Candito, though, brings more maritime experience to the organisation as it awaits type approval from the US Coast Guard for its ballast treatment gear.

Candito was founder and chief executive of Foresea Consulting, which consults on strategic planning, regulatory compliance and crisis management issues to the maritime industry. Prior to that he was president and chief executive of National Response Corporation, which provided oil spill response services.

In addition to being a former attorney specialising in maritime litigation and environmental laws, Candito is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy and served as a marine engineer on Exxon's domestic tanker fleet.

“My entire career has been focused on either working for or assisting shipowners, so when the Ecochlor opportunity presented itself I knew I found a way to continue those efforts within the same network,” Candito said.

Ecochlor last March submitted its application for type approval to the US Coast Guard, which has so far approved four ballast treatment systems for ships trading in US waters
