A grounded boxship sold for scrap by Djakarta Lloyd has sunk off Myanmar.

The 1,644-teu containership Sam Ratulangi (built 2001) hit the headlines in mainstream media as a "ghost ship" after it drifted ashore at the end of August near Thongwa as it was being towed to a shipbreakers in Bangladesh.

It went down on Wednesday, according to the Myanmar Times.

A photo showed the wreck was resting on the bottom with a list to the starboard side and part of the accommodation block and hull still showing above the water.

Authorities have ordered it to be removed by the new owner.

Ko Aung Phyo Myint, administrator of Aung Thar Tan village in Thongwa, was cited as saying the ship developed a list on Monday.

“The engine room was filled with water and things were scattered everywhere," he added. "The belly of the ship was corroding."

The vessel had been handed over to Bangladeshi shiprecycling interests earlier in August after being laid up off the Indonesian island of Batam since 2011, accompanied by its identical sistership, the MH Tharmin Palwo Buwono PB 1600 (built 2000).

This ship could be next on the Indonesian owner's chopping block.
