The US Merchant Marine Academy will soon have a new leader.

James Helis, the academy's superintendent for the past six years, has taken a position at parent organisation Maritime Administration as special assistant to the administrator.

He will work out of the federal agency's Washington DC headquarters.

"During this transition period, it is our priority to find an exceptional person to lead the Academy into the future, while still maintaining a strong and effective organisation," the academy said.

Admiral Helis will continue serving as superintendent while the academy looks for his replacement.

"We thank Admiral Helis for his service, and for his willingness to serve through the transition," the school said.

The Kings Point, New York-based school declined to comment further.

Helis' accomplishments during his tenure include handling financial and management issues which had threatened USMMA’s accreditation.

The academy's accreditation was put at risk two years ago when the Middle States Commission on Higher Education determined the school failed to meet five out of 14 standards.

They included: mission and goals; planning, resource allocation and institutional renewal; student admission and retention; student support service; and leadership and governance

He also led several major construction projects as part of the academy's capital improvement plan.

A change of command ceremony is planned for later this summer.

The academy is currently advertising the position on TradeWinds' website.

Key responsibilities include executive leadership, operation of academy facilities and developing policies and programs for midshipmen education through academy leaders.

The special assistant to the administrator must also ensure academic standards, conduct planning and carry out resource management and operational support activities.
