A grounded Turkish cargoship is taking on water through three holes in its hull off Italy.

The 5,800-dwt Efe Murat (built 1977) got stuck on 23 February off Bari.

The damage was found by the coastguard and a Dutch salvor during an inspection, the Repubblica website reported.

Two metres of water were discovered in the engine room.

Fuel removal operations will begin on Wednesday with the help of a barge.

No pollution has been reported.

Two tugs from Greece and Sicily will be brought in to remove the ship.

The vessel is listed as operated by Efemay Shipping, which has been contacted for further information.
