A Japanese-controlled supramax bulker has reportedly run aground in the mouth of the River Plate, TradeWinds understands.
The 58,642-dwt Glad Mark (built 2012) ran into trouble on Tuesday afternoon at KM 188, according to Buenos Aires-based maritime agency Nabsa.
The Panama-flagged bulker was reportedly proceeding inbound to San Nicolas Port when she went aground in the Punta Indio Channel.
“Preliminary information is that the vessel is partially obstructing navigation in the main channel,” Nabsa told TradeWinds.
Unconfirmed reports say the grounding was caused after the ship suffered some form of technical failure of its main engine.
However, Nabsa added that the vessel is currently attempting to refloat itself. No further details are currently available.
The River Plate waterway, which is a key waterway for Argentina's grain exports, is a notorious blackspot for vessel groundings.
The Glad Mark is said to be classed by ClassNK and insured by the Standard P&I Club, according to Clarksons.
