The huge fire on board Maersk Honam has been brought under control, according to India's coast guard (ICG).
The 15,262-teu vessel (built 2017) suffered a blaze 390 nautical miles from the Lakshadweep islands last Tuesday.
A sustained firefighting effort by ICG ship Shoor stopped the flames from spreading, reports said. Salvors Smit and Ardent were also brought in to tackle the fire.
ICG deputy commandant Avinandan Mitra told Gulf News: “Thick plumes of toxic fumes have now been replaced by white smoke which is a sign of cooling down of metal fire onboard the mega-containership."
Four crew remain missing after the incident, while 23 more were rescued.
One of these, a Thai national, later died from his injuries.
ICG has said the seafarers were affected by toxic fumes.
