A seafarer has died in a suspected case of malaria on a Greek bulker in Poland.

The Telewizja Republika website reported that the 40-year-old Filipino was taken to hospital in a critical condition from the 63,000-dwt Ilektra (built 2017) in Swinoujscie on Sunday evening.

He was rescucitated twice but could not be saved.

The RMF 24 website claimed the man was infected with malaria.

Malgorzata Kaplan from the Provincial Sanitary and Epidemiological Station in Szczecin said a second crewman taken to hospital was suffering from the infection.

He is in a "good" condition, the report said.

The vessel arrived from Liberia, reports said.
