A cement carrier captain has died in a collision with a bulker off Vietnam.

The Zing website reported that a vessel named as NB-8836 broke in two and sank quickly off Ha Long Bay in the early hours of Monday.

It was in collision with the 60,000-dwt wood chip carrier Daio Southern Cross (built 2012) after it left Cai Lan, the report said.

Four other crew from the cement carrier were rescued.

The body of master Nguyen Van Thanh, 32, has been recovered and an investigation has begun.

Daio Southern Cross was anchored off Vietnam on Monday.

Its manager Misuga Kaiun has been contacted for further information.
