Murmansk Shipping Company (MSCo) of Russia has blamed dangerous conditions off Cornwall for the grounding of a bulker on Tuesday.

It said it could launch legal action to reclaim expenses after saying the 23,200-dwt Kuzma Minin (built 1980) snagged on an underwater chain.

MSCo first deputy general director Ildar Neverov told Cornwall Live: "The vessel caught on a chain that was at the bottom of the strait. These unsafe navigation conditions were at the location of the vessel.

"It was uncontrollably dragged some distance and then, yes, it ran aground.

"There is no visible damage, there are no problems. We believe that the situation is easy to resolve."

The ship was refloated later on Tuesday.

The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency said it had dragged its anchor in fierce winds.
