A relatively modest tanker spill 17 years ago is shaping up to be at the centre of a landmark legal battle between the Gard marine insurance group and the International Oil Spill Compensation (IOPC) Funds.

TradeWinds has written extensively about the grounding of the 86,400-dwt Nissos Amorgos(built 1988) in Venezuela’s Maracaibo Channel in 1997 and the subsequent twists and turns of an incident that is now heading for London’s High Court.

Both Gard and the IOPC Funds are highly critical of rulings of Venezuela’s Supreme Court that have upset the usual co-operation in compensating victims of tanker spills and put the two on a collision course.

The Nissos Amorgos, part of the fleet of Aristides Alafouzos' Glafki (Hellas) was converted into a FPSO and as the BW Joko Tole is working under long term contract off Indonesia with P&I cover from Gard.

This is the place to read about the Nissos Amorgos saga as reported in TradeWinds and view the London High Court claim that Gard has issued against the 1971 IOPC Fund as well as other documents.
