A P&O Ports manager has been shot dead by terrorists in the Puntland region of Somalia.

Paul Fermosa was walking to work in Bosaso when he was shot and killed by an Al-Shabab militant disguised as a fisherman, Reuters reported.

The assassin was shot and killed by one of Fermosa's bodyguards.

The company is owned by Dubai's DP World. The Dubai media office confirmed the incident on 4 February.

"The circumstances of the incident are currently being investigated by P&O Ports and the Puntland authorities and with the company’s full co-operation," P&O Ports said in a statement to The National.

"The employee’s family have been notified and naturally our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.

"As this is an ongoing investigation, P&O Ports will not be making any further comment until the full facts surrounding the incident are known."

A guard was wounded in the attack, according to a police officer in Bosaso cited by Bloomberg.

Al-Shabab said it carried out the attack, accusing DP World of looting Somalia's resources.

It accused Formosa of being in Somalia "illegally", the BBC reported.

"We are behind the operation... we had warned him but he turned [a] deaf ear. He was illegally in Somalia," al-Shabab's military operations spokesman, Abdiasis Abu Musab, said.
