Four armed pirates boarded a vessel today in the Bight of Bonny off the coast of Nigeria, according to authorities.
The Marine Domain Awareness for Trade – Gulf of Guinea (MDAT-GoG) reported that the pirates boarded the vessel at 0715 Zulu time while 50 miles south of the Bonny River.
The crew gathered in the ship's citadel for safety. No injuries have been reported.
Vessels transiting the area are advised to exercise extreme caution.
The International Chamber of Commerce's International Maritime Bureau (IMB) states that there were 180 piracy incidents worldwide in 2017, down from 191 in 2016.
There have been 10 previous incidents reported so far this year, including three others off the coast of Nigeria, according to IMB statistics.
