A Dutch-owned tanker has been hit by another fire off the US, two months after suffering a previous blaze there.

The US Coast Guard said the 12,800-dwt asphalt/bitumen vessel Amber Bay (built 2016) caught fire in the engine room as it was leaving New York harbour on Wednesday night, according to NBC.

The crew of 22 extinguished the flames quickly.

The vessel was reported as disabled three miles south of Breezy Point.

AIS data showed it as stopped on Thursday morning.

The ship has been renamed from Feng Huang Ao, which was hit on 5 October by a "significant" fire that left it disabled 57 miles off Nantucket Island.

It was loaded with asphalt and was bound for New York.

That fire was extinguished using the ship’s carbon dioxide suppression system.

It was taken under tow for repairs in New York.

The tanker is listed as owned by Ocean Generous Shipping of the Netherlands.
