A Comoros Islands-flagged cargoship has capsized off Iran, seriously injuring a crewman.

The Tasnim news agency said all 14 crew from the 4,200-dwt SL Star (built 2007) were accounted for after the incident on Tuesday near the Iranian port of Bandar Rajaei.

Several were injured, however, including one who reportedly who lost a leg after containers collapsed.

Hadi Haqshenas, a deputy at the Ports and Maritime Organisation of Iran, attributed the accident to "miscommunication" between the ship's chief officer and a crane operator.

The crew was largely made up of Indian nationals.

Haqshenas said the ship was carrying 153 containers filled with cargo ranging from industrial oils to copper.

Work is underway to retrieve the sunken boxes.

SL Star is operated by Sea Link Shipping of UAE. Emails to the company were being returned on Wednesday.
