Forty-nine Singaporean students last week received maritime scholarships in total worth close to SGD 1.9m ($1.45m), as part of the Lion City’s bid to develop a pipeline of shipping talent.
Thirty four of them were awarded MaritimeONE scholarships worth more than SGD 770,000 in total thanks to the generosity of 26 outfits from the port, shipping, shipyard and ancillary services sectors.
MaritimeONE scholars can choose between 23 degree courses at local and overseas universities, as well as three diploma programmes at the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) at Singapore Polytechnic.
Since 2007, a total of 342 MaritimeONE scholarships worth more than SGD 9m have been awarded.
TMSS scholarships
In addition, 15 Tripartite Maritime Scholarships (TMSS) valued at about SGD 1.1m in total were awarded to students who are already enrolled on SMA diplomas.
TMSS seeks to nurture students to become ship captains, chief engineers and future leaders of Singapore’s maritime industry.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union and the Singapore Organisation of Seamen all supported the TMSS awards this year.
As did NYK, PACC Ship Managers, PIL, Sea Consortium, Thome Ship Management and, for the first time, Synergy Marine.
