The team searching for the sunken VLOC Stellar Daisy are reported to have found human remains during an inspection of the wreck.
“Even though it was not confirmed, the remains are believed to be one of the 22 missing crew,” said a statement from the Korean families of the missing crew.
The wreck of the 266,000-dwt bulker (built 1993) was discovered on 17 February by a team from Houston-based Ocean Infinity.
The vessel is said to be at a depth of 3,461 metres and located about 1,800 nautical miles due west of Cape Town.
“After recovery of the VDR, the search team of Stellar Daisy found human remains on 20 February at 10 PM UTC,” the statement added.
“The Foreign Ministry said the founded remains were in an orange suit, which was believed to be an immersion suit the crews were wearing at the time of the accident stated by the two survivors.”
The search vessel, Swire Seabed’s multipurpose offshore construction vessel Seabed Constructor (built 2014), left the search site on Sunday headed to Montevideo without recovering the remains.
“It is yet to be known whether they will return to the site to recover the remains,” the statement from the Korean families of the missing crew said.
The Polaris-owned 266,000-dwt Stellar Daisy (built 1993) sank on 31 March 2017 while transporting iron ore from Brazil to China, with the loss of 22 of its 24 crew.
Ocean Infinity hit the headlines last year when it agreed to the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 on a “no-cure, no-fee” basis.
