A US tug has been sent to try to refloat a Thorco Shipping cargoship aground on a remote reef in French Polynesia.

The 16,900-dwt Thorco Lineage (built 2014) got stuck last week off Raroia in the Tuamotus chain of atolls, Radio New Zealand reported.

French and French Polynesian authorities have held a meeting to consider salvage options.

The vessel is carrying zinc from the US to Australia.

The report said it had developed engine problems.

Thorco told TradeWinds: "We are in close dialogue with the vessel’s owners and technical managers. Investigations are still ongoing."

It added that the salvage team has already arrived, and the ship will be towed to a shallow location in order to perform an inspection by daylight.

It was awaiting further details.

The owner is listed as Phoenix Carriers of Denmark.

No injuries to the 18-strong crew have been reported. No pollution has been spotted either.

The owner and its insurer, the Standard P&I Club, have contracted a Californian tug, but this could take 10 days to reach the scene.
