Two seafarers have died after a poisoning incident on a Sea Tank Chartering tanker in Norway.

NRK reported that the men were found unconscious in a chemical tank on the 5,000-dwt Key Fighter (built 1989) off Stadlandet on 1 September.

A Spanish man in his 70s died after being taken to hospital by helicopter, and a 42-year-old Filipino, initially described as critically ill, died early on Sunday.

A spokesman for the owner and manager said: "Our thoughts and prayers go to their relatives.

"The company is arranging for the families to come to Alesund hospital to take farewell with their loved ones.

"The company is still waiting for information from the hospital about the cause of the deaths. However, the police have published a statement on the cause of the accident, stating that hydrogen sulphide poisoning has occurred."

Investigations were carried out in Maloy, and the ship has now left the port, bound for Erith.

Both the maritime authorities and the police released the ship on the day of the accident, the spokesman added.

"We are now waiting for their reports to be published. For the time being the company focuses on taking care of relatives of the deceased and crew as well as safety on board.

"When the ship reaches the next port and the flag state has been given the opportunity to carry out its investigations, the crew will be offered the opportunity to leave the ship if anyone so wishes."
