The Mississippi River is blocked after a UK-flagged bulker ran aground Friday morning.
Shortly after 8:30 a.m. local time, the 114,248-dwt Anglo Alexandria (built 2011) was grounded roughly 70 miles southeast of New Orleans, near the mouth of the waterway, the US Coast Guard said.
The disabled ship, plus several days of heavy fog, have created a queue of more than 50 ships waiting to enter or exit the river.
The agency said a tug is on scene to get the ship refloated and that the incident is under investigation.
It is unclear when the navigational channel might reopen.
The ship, per AIS data, was headed to the Suez Canal. It is not known what the ship is carrying.
The ship is owned by newcomer Anglo Investments and manager is Graig Ship Management.
It is insured by the North P&I Club.
