The crew of a BW LPG VLGC have been recognised for their bravery in deterring a pirate attack off Congo in October.

The 84,000-cbm BW Frigg (built 2016) narrowly escaped a hijacking, TradeWinds reported at the time.

All the crew have now been presented with bravery awards on board the vessel.

Pontus Berg of BW LPG told the crew: "What you did out there out there goes above and beyond what you expect from a normal crew. However it also shows serious and damn good seamanship."

Carl Schou of Wilhemsen Ship Management added: "I have to say when I received the first call my stomach basically dropped like a stone. I hope you never, never experience anything like this again."

At the time, a BW spokesperson told TradeWinds the ship was attacked by pirates as it was taking on bunkers off Pointe-Noire.

“Shots were fired and pirates attempted to board her from the bunker barge,” the spokesperson said.

BW praised the actions of the captain and the crew of the vessel, who were said to have “performed admirably well under duress” and followed all company guidelines and safety procedures.

The bunker tanker involved, the 9,596-dwt Anuket Amber (built 2008), was hijacked but later released.
