All 22 seafarers have been evacuated from a Shreyas Shipping & Logistics containership that was burning off India on Thursday.

The Indian Coast guard rescued the men from the 1,118-teu SSL Kolkata (built 2007) 55 miles off Haldia.

The blaze broke out just after midnight and spread to 60 containers, prompting the master to give the order to abandon ship.

The coast guard is monitoring the drifting vessel, from which plumes of black smoke are pouring.

"All the 22 survivors including the captain of the ship were picked up by the Coast Guard vessel," Coast Guard commander inspector General KS Sheoran told NDTV.

A coast guard vessel had been quickly launched, but the heat was such that a helicopter and aircraft from Vishakhapattinam had to be deployed as well.

The blaze spread very fast due to strong winds and rough seas.

The incident is the latest in a string of boxship fires, including a fatal blaze on the Maersk Honam in the Indian Ocean earlier this year.
