A veteran tanker has broken in two off the port of Tema in Ghana.

The Pulse website said the incident occurred at the anchorage.

The vessel was said to be owned in Lagos, Nigeria.

Vesseltracker identified it as the 2,800-dwt Anthony (built 1982), operated by Okasi P of Lagos, but this could not be confirmed.

All 10 crew escaped unhurt. It was not clear whether pollution had been reported.

The tanker has been operating in Ghana for three years.

Pulse said one half of the vessel had later been burnt, with sources blaming residents who had been trying to salvage a pump.

Ghanaian port authority GPHA towed the other half from the anchorage to the Tema New Town area to prevent it from sinking.

The agent of the ship could not be contacted.

Lieutenant colonel Joseph Punamane, Tema Port security manager, told the Ghana News Agency that the cause of the accident had yet to be ascertained.

The stern had been drifting towards the harbour entrance, while the bow was stable due to the weight of the anchor.
